Yale Off-Campus Housing
Welcome to Yale University and the City of New Haven! This web site has been designed to help ease your move into the exciting and diverse City of New Haven and its surrounding areas. We are pleased to present a new system which will help to serve the needs of those looking for housing and those who can offer the various types of housing available. It provides a secure environment to access this information.

With the design of the new system, New Yale Affiliates can access all of the information available by creating a guest log in to view the entries in the database. It will be necessary to create a profile and then access is given to the database. There is no fee involved with setting up this profile and gaining access. Visitors to the website, who are already enrolled and employed at the University, will use their University net id to access the information. The website offers services which include both long and short term housing listings*, roommate searches, information on neighborhoods and transportation, and the basics of finding an apartment and living off-campus.
If you are a Property Owner, you can advertise your property for rent or sale by submitting a listing application. This can also be done on-line. It will be necessary to create a profile and then access will be given for you to place your listing(s) directly. Payment can be processed on-line through a PayPal account which can be set up for the use of Master Card or Visa or payments can be made directly to the Off Campus Housing office located at 420 Temple Street, New Haven, CT 06511. Office hours are 9 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday. Cash, check or credit cards are acceptable. The fee for a Rental listing is $45.00 for forty-five days and for a Sale listing $45.00 for ninety days. For more information, please use the links to the left. Confirmations will be sent by the system during the process as to approval of the listing(s) and acceptance of the payment. The listing will not be entered into the database until payment is confirmed and received. The start of the time period begins with the confirmation that the listing has been approved.
In conjunction with the City of New Haven and the Livable City Initiative, a license is required when one or more dwelling units are rented in a two or more unit residential structure. The LCI licensing and inspection program is designed to protect the health, safety & welfare of New Haven residents and improve their quality of life. A rental license helps assure renters and those charged with protecting the city that the licensed property has met minimum housing standard and provides landlords with consistent enforcement codes. For more information please visit the following website: www.cityofnewhaven.com. Livable City Initiative can also be reached at 230-946-7090 or by fax at 203-946-4899. If your property fits the requirements as a multiple dwelling unit, the license number must be provided with the listing.
Revised Applications for Rental & Sale Listings
As of December 15, 2009, the only Rental and Sale Listing Applications that will be accepted by the Yale Off-Campus Housing Service are those listed for use with the new website. For those who wish to hand-write the information, new downloadable forms will be available. These new listing forms will reflect the changes required to place the listing. For those placing their listing electronically, there is a section where you need to Accept the Terms & Conditions for entering the listing. For those who choose to place their listing manually, they will be required to sign this statement prior to posting their listing. The current paragraph states the following:
Renters who believe that a property owner or sublettor has failed to comply with applicable housing laws, regulations, or provisions of a lease, or has engaged in conduct that is otherwise unethical or wrongful are encouraged to file a complaint with the Off-Campus Housing Service. This office may, at its sole discretion, take action on such complaints, including, but not limited to, making complaints available to other students, removing existing listings, and prohibiting future listings by the subject property owner or sublettor. By signing below, I consent to these terms as a condition for listing my property with the Off-Campus Housing Service.
Compliments and Complaints concerning rentals made through Yale University Off-Campus Housing can be submitted by tenants and will be kept on file at the office located at 420 Temple Street, Room G6. A listing of compliments and complaints will be available for review by all potential renters that are part of the Yale community.
When a complaint is filed with an enforcement agency, Yale may suspend or remove any listings by this individual/company until the complaint is resolved. If the complaint has been upheld, all listings current and future, made by this individual/company will be restricted.
Reinstatements to our service will only be considered after written certification that past problems, issues and/or violations have been resolved. All listings that are restricted under this procedure will forfeit all costs associated with the listings.
Yale also services the right to restrict listings to its service for any reason, including bounced checks, violation of city and state law and inaccurate information submitted on the application.
All forms for filing Compliments and Complaints are located in the Forms section.
Attention Landlords—Don’t be Scammed!
It has come to our attention that several landlords have been contacted by people using the Off-Campus Housing Service database. The prospective “renters” communicate by email and are anxious to rent the apartment. So much so that they are willing to provide a full years rent in advance. Payments are forwarded to the landlord in the form of a check or money order and are often in excess of the full years rent amount. The landlord is then asked to remit the overpayment to the renter to cover travel expenses, furnishings, etc.
If this happens to you, Do Not Send or Return Money to a prospective renter until the check or money order has had ample time to clear. Banks will often unknowingly accept fraudulent checks at first, and contact the accountholders and discredit the check only later when the fraud is discovered. You may choose also to decline to accept the check or money order at all.
If you suspect a scam is in progress, you may request that the bank, post office or police investigate the situation.
How to protect yourself:
- Ask for references! (The Yale departments will be happy to verify the enrollment status of possible tenants.)
- Be suspicious of anyone who contacts you with requests like those described above.
- Do not feel pressured to respond or send money back; that is part of the scam.
- Wait for checks and money orders to clear before proceeding.
You are welcome to contact our office for additional assistance and information as you explore your off-campus housing options.
Again, welcome to New Haven!
