Cell phones for graduate and professional students

Graduate and professional students at Yale have a number of options available to them for cell phone service. Verizon and Sprint offer special discounts. T-Mobile offers no special discount, but their standard rates for comparable plans are lower than the discounted rates of Verizon and Sprint. T-Mobile offers several prepaid plans, and there is a T-Mobile corporate store nearby.

International students: T-Mobile does not require you to have a social-security number; you can register with your visa number.

Because the plans of Verizon and Sprint were designed primarily for Yale staff, they ask for proof of Yale association and a pay stub. The former Sprint representative, however, said that a Yale ID would suffice for anyone who walked into the Sprint store in nearby Orange, Connecticut. So, if you are an existing customer of Sprint or Verizon, be sure to ask for the Yale discount, even if you are mid-contract.

If you are getting a new phone, please consider going to a corporate store. You will get better service from a corporate store than you will from a third-party dealer, and, needless to say, you will avoid the numerous complications that may arise when ordering online.

Discount wholesale stores: Costco and BJ's offer their members heavy discounts on cell phone equipment and service plans. For more information, please talk to representatives at those stores.
