Conference Overview

The inaugural conference of the GHLI, Strategic Problem Solving in Global Health will be held June 15-19, 2009 at Yale University in New Haven, CT.

Location: Greenberg Center, 391 Prospect Street

The invited countries are: Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, Mexico and Rwanda. All have accomplished exceptional improvements in health systems in recent years despite substantial resource obstacles, and will come to the conference to focus on developing clear and actionable strategies to address current health systems priorities.

Each country delegation of approximately five individuals will be comprised primarily of Ministry of Health officials, as well as representatives from non-governmental organizations and academic institutions. The delegations will work with Yale faculty to identify a specific health systems challenge that is a current priority for the country. The problem statements cover a range of topics including hospital reform, efficient monitoring and utilization of human resources for health, regulatory and financing strategies to promote performance and quality improvement among clinical and management staff, coordination of funding streams, and strengthening financing and service delivery mechanisms to better serve aging populations. Please view the Invited Countries page for more information on the participating countries and the problems they will be addressing during the 2009 conference.

Delegates will be exposed to practical education within three major themes:

  • Grand Strategy: a paradigm for accomplishing transformative objectives with limited resources
  • Strategic Problem Solving: a rigorous and systematic approach to addressing complex and multifaceted problems in practical ways
  • Leadership Development: enhancing individual and group leadership capacity to sustain positive changes in global health systems

Delegates will have the opportunity to apply these principles and tools in facilitated work session focused on the problems they have identified. Through classroom learning sessions from Yale faculty, distinguished panels of experts, and work sessions supported by Yale staff fellows, the conference will serve as a launching point for delegations to implement focused health system strengthening efforts in their countries.
