Health Care Victory: |
I believe that Yale University should negotiate in good faith, with graduate students, a written and binding agreement governing graduate school policies including, but not limited to, the terms of the Teaching Fellows program and health care benefits. This petition was sponsored by GESO in 1998, and was signed by 1,053 graduate students. This represents a majority of all the graduate students-in-residence at Yale. The petition originally had a March 31 deadline, which was extended to May 1. A timeline1. On April 14, 1998, The Yale Daily News runs a story about the petitions, and administrators respond skeptically. 2. On April 15, The GESO Coordinating Committee submits the petitions, along with a cover letter outlining the issues of concern to graduate students. 3. On April 15, GESO holds its Spring Membership Meeting. 4. On April 16, President Levin mails all the petitions back to Rachel Sulkes, GESO chair. 5. On April 23, The GESO Coordinating Committee sends an open letter to the Yale Community. 6. On April 29, the officers of GESO meet with President Levin to discuss the petition. He makes very clear that he is not prepared to honor its request in any way. 7. On May 1, the deadline comes and goes. 8. In August, the Graduate School announces that all PhD students will be provided with free health care, and that half of the health care fees for dependents will be covered. |
