Postdoctoral Research Position, High-Pressure Mineral Physics at Yale University. The Department of Geology and Geophysics at Yale University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in the Yale Mineral Physics Diamond Anvil Cell group led by Professor Kanani K. M. Lee. The Yale Mineral Physics Diamond Anvil Cell group conducts experimental studies of properties of minerals and other planetary materials under high pressures and temperatures. Candidates should have a PhD in Earth science, physics, chemistry, or related field and a proven record of accomplishment in the following areas: 1) diamond anvil cell experiments; 2) synchrotron radiation. The successful candidate will participate in synchrotron radiation studies on materials under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. Experience with diamond anvil cells and laser-heating techniques is required. The Mineral Physics Diamond Anvil Cell group at Yale University is growing and will include resistive and laser heating, gas loading and confocal Raman spectroscopy facilities. Additionally, a new electron microprobe will be available in January 2009 in the Department of Geology & Geophysics and will be available for chemical analysis of quenched samples. Postdoctoral Associates In Invertebrate Paleontology At Yale University Applications are invited for two postdoctoral positions in paleontology at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. The role of the appointees will be to promote Yale's activities in invertebrate paleontology. Applications are sought from individuals with interests in the evolution, systematics and fossil record of invertebrates, and/or fossilization processes. The successful applicants will have completed a PhD and demonstrated scientific achievement at the time of appointment. The positions are for two years commencing on January 1st, 2009. The postdoctoral positions are associated with the appointment of Derek E.G. Briggs, Frederick William Beinecke Professor of Geology and Geophysics, as Director of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. The duties of one appointee will include some teaching and providing research assistance to Derek Briggs, but s/he will also be expected to pursue a personal research agenda. The second appointee will carry out research related to the collections in the Division of Invertebrate Paleontology and will assist with curation in his/her area of expertise. We are particularly interested in researchers with expertise on areas of the collection currently under development, which include the Schuchert Brachiopod Collection, the Ciurca Eurypterid Collection, June R. P. Ross Collection (bryozoans), the Charles Ross Collection (foraminifera, esp. fusilinids), and the Galloway-St. Jean Collection of stromatoporoids. In addition to research in systematic paleontology, the collections can be used to analyze patterns of macroevolution and paleobiogeography via our database facilities.
