File Backup

Access file shares from PC, Mac, Linux

\\plate1\vaults , \\plate1\netid$ , \\plate1\research-groups - folders you have access to on the network you can store your data here and it will be backed up.

\\morb\ = this is the printer server, the department printers eddy, kgl213hall, kgl318, and the copier (called copier2560 under linux) live on this machine.

to access the shares from windows

click start -> run -> type \\servername\sharename

to access the shares from mac osx

Under "Connect to Server" (which is off one of the main desktop menus),
use the address:

smb://servername/sharename

to access the shares from linux

log in with your netid

issue the command smbclient

smbclient -k //servername/sharename

or

smbclient //servername/sharename -U netid -W Yale -> hit enter -> enter
password

 

Microsoft Software

Yale now has a license arrangement providing them *free* for qualified teaching and research purposes. To enroll in MSDNAA and get more information about operating systems and software covered by this arrangement, visit the MSDNAA page, located under the software library. http://www.yale.edu/software

Adobe Software

Adobe Software licenses are available for a small fee, please purchase
one then the Department's IT person can install it for you

Get an IP for your computer

get an IP, and if you are a student go to, http://www.yale.edu/netreg This will expire on a yearly basis

If you are any other position, please see the department IT person for help, you may be entitled for a static ip and/or non expiring dynamic IP

Printing

the printers are Savin CLP28's and the Copier is a Savin 2560.

Please get a Pin number to print from the department secretary first

in your mac or pc, please make sure you have your search paths say

geology.yale.edu, yale.edu

pc

1) click start -> run -> \\morb -> click setup in the Clientinstall folder

2) answer yes to all the default questions, when it asks for server name
enter "MORB" without quotes

3) click on the printers eddy, kgl213hall, kgl318, and Copier to install
them

mac

1) click go -> connect to server -> connect to smb://morb

2) go to the Drivers folder and copy Billing software, printer drivers to your desktop

3) install the Printer drivers first

4) in your system properties click printer tools, enter the following
information

5) select add printer

choose HP jetdirect or network connected printer

enter printername kgl213hall.geology.yale.edu, kgl318.geology.yale.edu, or eddy.geology.yale.edu

linux

1) make sure your documents are converted to PS (postscript) if its in
any other format other than straight ascii text

2) issue the command smbprint.sh printername filename, IE ./smbprint.sh
eddy /etc/hosts

Printing to 3rd floor printer/copier

IF YOU ARE FACULTY OR STAFF
to print to the Canon IR3035. Just click on the GG3rdFloor device and run the driver set up script. This will give you pop-ups on your PC to login with your netid & password, once you login you will see your cost centers - PTAEO's to charge for the printing. http://uniprintweb/Uniprint/Packages.asp

IF YOU ARE A STUDENT
For students, we have the hold queue, this is so students can print to the device, the print station will hold the jobs on the print release station and they can release them with their own Uniprint debit account. This hold queue is set up on: \\uniprintps7\GG_3rdFloor

 

Password protecting a department web page

1 ) my webpage is http://earth.geology.yale.edu/~user I want to password protect this folder http://earth.geology.yale.edu/~user/secret/

2) this is what you have to do to make the folder secret. Every folder must have an index.html file, Type the line below, this will make your html file appear as a file that can be read by the password software.

ln -s index.html index.php

3) In /home/user/html/secret you will create a file called ".htaccess" Notice the leading "." In the filename, this is important Use-your-favorite-editor .htaccess

you will have 2 choices to what you can do with this file.

Choice A allows only people with certain netid's into you secret web page folder, Add the 2 lines below into the .htaccess file

AuthType CAS
Require user netid1 netid2 netid3 etc..

Choice B allows anyone with a netid into your secret web page. Add the 2 lines below into the .htaccess file

AuthType CAS
Require valid-user

4) open up firefox or internet explorer and goto
http://earth.geology.yale.edu/~user/secret it should ask you for your netid and password.
