Global Environmental Governance Project

The Global Environmental Governance (GEG) Project is a far-reaching conversation that has taken place over the course of the past five years. Since June of 1998, multi-stakeholder workshops, known as Dialogues, have carried the conversation forward. We have hosted six Dialogues, involving more than 80 individuals from approximately 30 nations and from a variety of sectors, including governments, intergovernmental agencies, academia, research institutions, business, and civil society organizations.

Summary documents follow for each of the Dialogues. The content of the chairpersons' summaries and other documents trace the development of the GEG project. Participants' visions of governance reform have evolved over the years as new voices have entered into the discussion and changes have taken place in the policy realm. In the early stages of the Project, the Dialogues focused largely on the establishment of a global environmental organization. In recent years, the discussions have shifted to promote and advance the creation of a Global Environmental Mechanism, which is characterized by a functional approach to governance.
