The fifth and most recent meeting of the Global Environmental Governance Dialogue convened on June 20-22, 2001 at the headquarters of IUCN—the World Conservation Union in Gland, Switzerland. The largest and most high-profile of the Dialogues to date, this meeting brought together 35 experts from 20 different countries of origin.

The Dialogue featured discussion on the relationship between global environmental governance and the sustainable development agenda and on necessary aspects of strengthened global environmental governance. The Dialogue participants worked together to assess both current needs for and existing models of global environmental governance in view of the upcoming World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, September 2002.
