Graduate Student to Supervise International Studies/Language Community Service
Program in New Haven School
Graduate Student wanted to serve as a liaison for the partnership
between the Yale Center for International & Area Studies’ Program in
International Educational Resources (PIER) and East Rock Global Magnet
School, a New Haven elementary public school for academic year
2000-2001. Responsibilities begin in September 2000.
This partnership seeks to develop cultural awareness in addition to
providing basic foreign language training at the elementary school
level. Yale University students serve as tutors for the following
languages: Swahili, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, and Japanese.
The liaison serves as an intermediary between Yale University students
and the school's administration and is expected to provide resource
guidance for both the school and the tutors. Liaison must be able to
spend 6-8 hours per week during school hours, at East Rock Global
Studies Magnet School, located on the corner of Willow Streets and Nash
Streets in New Haven and 2-4 hours per week at YCIAS, working with the
PIER Director.
Liaison works with the Magnet School Team, teachers at all levels and
the language tutors to implement and strengthen the global studies
curriculum at East Rock. Liaison is responsible for supervising and
scheduling undergraduate and graduate student language tutors,
participating in weekly meetings with school staff and/or
administrators, meeting regularly with tutors, assisting with and
participating in professional development for the tutors. The liaison is
also responsible for maintaining sign-in sheets and classroom activity
summaries that are collected on a weekly basis, and for completing an
evaluation of & report on the program at the end of the year (May).
The
liaison will, when required, provide curriculum assistance and support
by bringing materials from the PIER Resource Library at YCIAS to
teachers at East Rock, doing bibliographic and materials research with
the ER Librarian, and other tasks which link the International Studies
resources at Yale with East Rock. Additional responsibilities may
include the maintenance of a bulletin board in Luce Hall, organization
of field trips to local museums, and involvement in the school's
International Fair.
Preferred MA candidate in International Relations or area studies or
Ph.D. student with strong international or area studies interest.
Overseas experience helpful. Must have experience with, understanding
of, and commitment to education and a strong interest in promoting
partnerships between YCIAS and New Haven Schools. Access to
transportation (car or bicycle) helpful. Ten hours/week @ $20 per hour
for maximum of 30 weeks. Must qualify for U.S. federal work study
assistance.
