Who We Are

Our mission  Food From the Earth is a student organization at Yale that works to advocate for and educate about sustainable food and agriculture, and to nurture and celebrate a genuine culture of food--at Yale and in our greater community. Working in partnership with the Yale Sustainable Food Project and operating as a Slow Food convivium, Food from the Earth is actively working to attain 100% sustainable food in Yale's dining halls, and to encourage similar projects promoting sustainable food in the local community and across the country.

Our history  Yale students founded Food from the Earth in 2000 and advocated for organic food, a Yale farm, and composting.   In 2002 the Yale Sustainable Food Project was born—a joint endeavor of Yale University Dining Services, students, faculty, and administrators.   Food from the Earth now serves as an independent and vital link between Yale students and the Project.

Our interests  As a group, we explore:

  • The meaning of “sustainable food.”
  • How to grow and cook great-tasting food.
  • The student role in bringing sustainable food to universities.
  • The benefits are of eating local, seasonal food that has been grown in ecologically responsible ways.
  • The problems with conventional agriculture related to the environment, human health, social justice, heritage and culture, animal welfare, the economy, and international relations.

Our students  We are made up of students who are interested in any aspect of sustainable food.   Although some students have experience with farming, cooking, or food-related issues, many do not.   We encourage all Yale students to join us.
