What We Do

Weekly meetings  Food from the Earth meets weekly for one hour in the basement of Berkeley College.   For a schedule of meetings, click here.

At our meetings, we:

  • Eat snacks and desserts freshly prepared by students, often using ingredients that students have grown in the Yale Garden.
  • Catch up on Food from the Earth events, projects, and activities.
  • Discuss plans for and updates on the Yale Garden.
  • Enjoy inspiration in the form of a poem, song, or artwork.
  • Have a student presentation and group discussion about topics related to sustainable food.   Past topics have included:
    • Olive oil: how and where it's made, its history, and how to pick the best bottle—followed by olive oil tasting.
    • The origin of a Yale salad: one student's investigation into where Yale's salad greens—organic and conventional—come from.
    • Local, organic, or fair trade?   A debate about which of these is most important.

Leadership opportunities  Students can give as much or as little time as they like to the group.   We encourage all students to lead and/or create their own Food from the Earth events, projects, and activities, and we provide resources for them to accomplish their goals.

Special events  Food from the Earth organizes a variety of special events held throughout the school year.   For a schedule of upcoming events, click here.

Examples of past events:

  • Cooking, dinner, and discussion with local farmers.
  • Harvest and spring festivals with food, live music, gardening activities, and appearances by local farmers.
  • A professor round-table discussion about sustainable food issues and the Yale curriculum.
  • Study breaks in residential colleges during exam periods featuring fresh-baked apple crisp, organic brownies, and organic ice cream.
  • An open house with students from other northeastern colleges who are interested in promoting sustainable food at their own schools.
  • A Valentine's chocolate truffle-making workshop.

Workdays at the Yale Garden  Food from the Earth organizes student workdays at the Yale Garden several times a week.   All students, whether or not they come to Food from the Earth meetings, are invited to participate in these workdays.   No gardening or farming experience is necessary; just be ready for some good work, community, and fresh air.   Interested students may also lead their own workdays.
