Purpose: The primary purpose of Labor Distribution
(LD) is to create an efficient mechanism to assign charging
instructions to employee compensation. This task is performed in
the Labor Schedules section of LD.
Yale needs a separate module to accomplish this goal
due to:
the large number of employees;
the different types of payroll (weekly, biweekly,
semi-monthly, and monthly);
the complexity in determining the appropriate charging
instruction.
An example of the complexity of charging instructions
is that an employee could be charged to several different charging
instructions for regular compensation. Other compensation (such
as clinical bonuses, summer compensation, or overtime) may be charged
to yet another charging instruction. The timing of these charges
can also vary throughout the year.
If payrolls are processed and incorrect charging instructions
are used, then the Distribution Adjustment section of LD is used
to correct these errors.
The final purpose of LD is to provide Effort Reports
to comply with both Federal and University guidelines. Effort Reports
summarize the charging instructions for people who charge sponsored
awards.
