A (roughly) life-sized Sassafras albidum cookie
showing drill-holes from the center, mid-radius,
and outer portions of the cookie

Tissue Sub-sampling:

Three cookies from each of the three trees were used to analyze the elemental concentrations of the bolewood and bark. Cookies from 0.25 m., 8 m., and 12 m. above ground level from each tree were used for chemical analysis. From each cookie, 3 wood samples were taken using a drill press equipped with a 1/2 inch bit. Each drill sample was taken from a different part of the cookie-one from the center, one midway between the center and the sapwood, and one close to the outside of the cookie (the sapwood). The bark corresponding to each cookie was ground and placed into labeled jars. In addition, representative samples from one large branch, one medium-sized branch, and one small branch were ground using a Wiley Mill. Before preparation for ashing the subsamples, each cookie, bark, and branch sample was oven-dried, again at 70 degrees celsius for a minimum of 12 hours.
