Summary

This  is is a cross section of the local bedrock geology. The section is from west to east (left to right) looking north and illustrates the several Triassic and Jurassic age formations. Saltonstall ridge is formed by the Holyoke basalt which outcrops in the ridge just west of the lake. Erosional processes, mostly glaciation, scoured out the softer East Berlin formation leaving the depression which now contains lake Saltonstall. The top of the ridge is about 60 meters above the lake.
