Summary

The soils on Saltonstall ridge top and bottom and in some midslope areas reflect their Basaltic origins and the scraping of the recent geological continental glaciation. The moderately acidic shallow soils are too poor for much except woodlands and even trees have low productivity due to high seedling mortality in the excessively well-drained and droughty soils. Deer herbivory accentuates this lack of regeneration. More information can be obtained here. Information on soil maps is from sheet #68 of th New Haven County Soil map.
