An evergreen shrub, around 3 ft. tall, producing fleshy red berries known to be poisonous to livestock.

NEEDLES: Flattened and stiff; spreading in two rows; may be yellow underneath

TWIGS: Smooth

HABITAT: Moist uplands

USES: This evergreen is the source of Taxol, a cancer fighting drug. The hard, close-grained wood made its relative useful in manufacturing bows in ancient times.
