White Ash 
Fraxinus americana L. 


Large tree growing to 25 meters tall. Moderately shade-tolerant and fast-growing. Leaves flush late in spring and drop early in the fall. 

BUDS: Rust-brown side buds with 4-6 exposed scales; oposite leaf scars are crescent/oval--notch on upper margin surrounds bud 

TWIGS: Polished twigs; stout and hairless; greenish-gray brown 

BARK: Dark and tight with diamond pattern of shallow ridges 

HABITAT: Moist soils of slopes and valleys 

USES: Wood used for baseball bats, furniture, and tool handles.
