FIELD/LECTURE NOTES: native wetland indicator (acidic soils), male and female plants, visible stipules (w/ hand lens), easily confused with spicebush until you smell it (no smell), dark stems, same genus as Christmas Holly, bright red fruit but it dies at first frost, accumulates zinc.
