Large tree with irregular crown and a distincitve shaggy bark when mature, growing 70 to 100 ft. tall and living for up to 200 years.

BUDS: Large and hairy with green/brown outer bud scales that stay on twig; many overlapping bud scales

TWIGS: Stout with heart-shaped leaf scars; red-brown; slightly hairy to shiny; many bundle scars

BARK: Shaggy and flaking in long, narrow, curved strips attached at the middle

HABITAT: Moist soils; mature woods and fencerows

USES: Nuts are commercially cultivated.
