Field Notes:
An evergreen heath, growing 30 to 40 ft. tall, believed to be native
to the Smokies and Rhode Island and producing large pink to purple
flowers.
LEAVES: Large and leathery; toothless; rolled edges; hairy and whitish
underneath
TWIGS: Hairy
HABITAT: Wetland indicator; thicket forming
USES: This plant is often planted as an ornamental. The wood may
be used for tool handles and small decorative objects.
