Common Privet 
Ligustrum vulgare


Tall shrub reaching 5 meters high; stout with many branches.  Native to Europe and Northern Africa but widely planted in North America as a hedge. 

LEAVES: Opposite; simple; many remaining persistent throughout the winter.

TWIGS: Green becoming light gray; leaf scars are elliptical; white pith.

HABITAT: Becoming naturalized in urban environments and disturbed forests; seeds are spread widely by birds.   

USES: Very popular hedge plant; withstands pruning and cutting well.
