Norway Maple 
Acer platanoides 


Introduced as a street tree because it is a good shade tree and is relatively free from insect pests and disease. Now invading many disturbed forests around urban areas. Shade-tolerant and moderately long-lived. It is a medium sized tree reaching 12-18 meters tall. 

BUDS: Terminal bud dull reddish-brown; broad, short-stalked. Lateral buds small and appressed. 

TWIGS: Tips of opposing leaf scars meet; moderately stout; smooth; greenish to brown colored 

BARK: Dark gray; becoming closely fissured with interlacing ridges. Bark of older trees often resembles white ash bark 

HABITAT: Grows well in fertile well-drained soils but is highly adaptive to many different habitats. Native across Europe from Norway to Turkey and in western Asia; introduced to U.S.
