A gnarled evergreen shrubor small tree with medium sized white to purple flowers. Leaves poisonous to cattle, sheep, and deer. Forming dense clonal stands.

LEAVES: Leathery; flat and hairless; pointed; toothless; light green beneath

TWIGS: Hairless.

BUDS: Flower buds large and resemble rhododenron; lateral buds small and silky.

HABITAT: Rocky woods; mountain and hill slopes.
