This conifer that sheds its needles in autumn has a thin, conical crown and grows between 40 and 80 ft. tall.

NEEDLES: Deciduous; soft and slender; 3-angled; clustered on short spurs; on longer twigs needles occur singly.

TWIGS: Spurs and longer leader twigs.

BARK: Reddish-brown; thin and scaly.

HABITAT: Wet peaty soils of bogs and swamps.

USES: This tree is planted as an ornamental in colder climates. The durable wood is used for house frames, railroad ties, poles, and pulpwood.
