Gray Birch
Betula populifolia


  A small, bushy, pioneer tree with many short branches that nearly reach the ground. Gray birches are usually around 30 ft. tall.The gray birch acts as a nurse tree to protect the seeds of longer lived trees. The wood is commercially used for spools and firewood.

BUDS: Hairless

TWIGS: Slender with resinous dots; reddish brown; has catkins

BARK: Chalky or grayish white and smooth; dark chevrons at bases of branches; narrow horizontal marks around an extremely flexible trunk

HABITAT: Dry barren uplands and moist soils; pioneer species on abandoned fields and burned areas
