tree stem
buds, axillary/lateral--buds

sitting squarely at the end of a twig (Click

buds, collateral--extra

bud scale scars--scars from
last year's terminal bud scales (Click

bundle scars--scars from
vascular bundles within leaf scars (Click

clone--product of asexual
reproduction, exact genetic replicate of parent (barring mutations), often
from roots, reproductive strategy among poplar, beech.
imbricate--overlapping, like
shingles on a roof
peltate scaly--think of corn
flakes stuck on a twig (may need a hands lens or electron microscope to
see them)
pith--stuff in the middle

samara--winged seed (Click

species, escaped--originally
introduced, now survives in the wild on its own.
species, indicator--presence
and/or condition of species indicates environmental conditions at the site
(ie. the presence of spicebush indicates mesic conditions)
species, introduced--species
originally imported from another region, also called "exotic."
species, native--species
indigenous to area, was not imported.
species wetland--typically
found in sites that are mesic (moist) to hydric (saturated), indicates
wetlands, chiefly due to its roots' tolerance to anaerobic conditions.
weed--fast growing, widely
dispersed species dependent on disturbance, may preclude regeneration of
more desired species.
