Ginkgo biloba


Ginkgo is native to China and is the sole surviving member of an ancient family of plants. It is a common street tree in temperate areas widely planted for its beauty and resistance to air pollution and insects. Its name is a transliteration from the Chinese term meaning silver apricot - which describes the ginkgo fruits.

BUDS: Stalked buds.

LEAVES: Two-lobed, fanshaped leaves, turning bright yellow in fall.

BARK: Dark gray, deeply fissured in interlacing ridges.

HABITAT: Native to well drained upland slopes of China but a common street tree throughout North America.
