Ginkgo is native to China and is the sole surviving member of an ancient
family of plants. It is a common street tree in temperate areas widely
planted for its beauty and resistance to air pollution and insects. Its
name is a transliteration from the Chinese term meaning silver apricot
- which describes the ginkgo fruits.
BUDS: Stalked buds. LEAVES: Two-lobed, fanshaped leaves, turning bright yellow in fall. BARK: Dark gray, deeply fissured in interlacing ridges. HABITAT: Native to well drained upland slopes of China but a common street tree throughout North America.
