Flowering Dogwood
Cornus florida


 Small tree reaching 5 to 10 meters high and 15 to 30 centimeters in diameter.  Very shade tolerant; slow-growing; very long-lived. Reproduces vegetatively by layering of stems. 

BUDS: Terminal bud narrow, acute, with 1 pair of bud scales and somewhat downy; lateral buds small, appressed. 

TWIGS: Thin, green becoming light brown; whitish hairs. 

BARK: "Alligator bark"; thin, reddish brown, separating into blocky plate-like scales. 

HABITAT: Typical understory species; very wide site tolerances though intolerant of consistently high water table.
