Field Notes:
Large tree, 60 to 80 ft. tall, with a broad and irregular crown and leaves that are smoothly lobed, like a sine wave.
BUDS: Multiple, clustered end buds that are narrow and sharp
TWIGS: Hairless; may be yellow
BARK: Thick, dark, and deeply furrowed
HABITAT: Acidic/neutral soils; xeric sites--sandy, gravelly, or rocky soils
USES: The bark was once used for tanning leather due to the high tannin content.
