Black Birch
Betula lenta


This birch, averaging 50 to 80 ft. in height, has twigs and foliage with a wintergreen odor and flavor when crushed.
Oil of wintergreen was once obtained from the bark. Fermented sap can be used to make birch beer. The heavy wood can be used to make furniture. 

BUDS: Long and hairless

TWIGS: Slender; reddish brown with pale lenticels; has catkins

BARK: Shiny and tight with thin horizontal stripes; on older trees, fissured into plates like those of Black Cherry.

HABITAT: Cool, moist uplands; in mature forests with other hardwoods and conifers.
