A many branched, super-straight growing shrub averaging 3 to 10 ft. tall.
BUDS: Opposite; several bud scales
TWIGS: Slender and hairless, with ringed nodes
BARK: Smooth; gray or reddish-brown
HABITAT: Ranges from moist to dry, sandy soils; thicket forming in open areas, borders, or understory of forests
USES: Historically used for making arrows
