THE YALE MIRROR SERIES FOR READING CHINESE
These graded readers develop
an orderly recognition of basic Chinese characters, both the
complex (i.e. traditional) form and the simplified forms, now
the official forms used in China. Most students will need to
learn both forms. The selection of characters is based on the
lists of most common characters in use in Chinese written materials.
Many of the titles listed below are designed to be used in combination
with the spoken texts (for which see previous section in this
catalog) but can be used independently with adaptation. Most
of the basic readers are also provided with supplementary materials
or review texts, as well as Chinese characters "flash cards"
and also materials to practice how to write Chinese characters.
Most or all of the readers are supplemented with audio tapes
and so also function as comprehension materials. Titles listed
in this section focus primarily on the "Yale Mirror Series"
but many other related titles are also listed. "Mirror"
texts are asterisked after title.
