About FAS

Faculty of Arts and Sciences

The academic leadership of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences is characterized by a distinctive organizational structure in which the Provost shares with the Dean of Yale College and the Dean of the Graduate School responsibility for faculty appointments, reviews and promotions and the administration of the departments of instruction. The administration of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences is therefore distributed among three offices: Yale College, the Graduate School, and the Office of the Provost.

Organization of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences

Faculty members holding appointments in the academic departments of both Yale College and the Graduate School together constitute the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Within this Faculty there are four divisions: the division of the biological sciences, the division of the humanities, the division of the social sciences, and the division of the physical sciences and engineering. Advisory committees for each division and a director of the division are appointed by the president. Each advisory committee is chaired by the director and is responsible for making recommendations concerning appointments and educational policy in that division to the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The Executive Committee consists of the President, the Provost, the Dean of Yale College, and the Dean of the Graduate School.
