COALITION FOR MINISTRY IN DAILY LIFE

Called to Purposive Life and Work: New Perspectives on Vocation and Occupation

A weekend consultation co-sponsored by Coalition for Ministry in Daily Life, Yale Center for Faith & Culture, Center for Faith in the WorkPlace, Fuller Theological Seminary, Luther Seminary Center for Lifelong Learning, and National Center for the Laity. See the Yale Divinity School press release.

April 1–3, 2005 | Yale Divinity School, New Haven, Connecticut

Participants in the 13th annual consultation of the Coalition for Ministry in Daily Life will:

  • Explore fresh ways of tackling the Sunday-Monday disconnect among Christians.
  • Consider creative breakthroughs being made to discover God’s call to — and gifts for — purposive life and work.
  • Develop strategies for a more complete embrace of this dimension of the Gospel by the whole Christian community.

Presenters

  • Miroslav Volf, theology professor at Yale University and author of Work in the Spirit
  • Paul Lakeland, religious studies professor at Fairfield University and author of The Liberation of the Laity
  • Matilda Chase, former banker, now Presbyterian pastor in Pennsylvania
  • Armand Larive, carpenter, Episcopal priest, and author of After Sunday: A Theology of Work
  • Judith Valente, correspondent for PBS-TV and poet
  • Michael Bennethum, Lutheran pastor in Pennsylvania and author of Listen! God is Calling
  • Darrell Cosden, Lecturer in Christian Doctrine and Ethics at International Christian College in Glasgow, Scotland

Schedule

The consultation will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 1, and conclude by noon on Sunday, April 3. All sessions will be at Yale Divinity School. The program will alternate between plenary presentations and small-group discussions. Ample opportunities will be provided for one-on-one conversations and for meeting with people of like occupations and interests.

A post-consultation working retreat will take place April 3–5 at Mercy Center in nearby Madison, CT (see below).

Housing

A limited amount of discounted lodging ($99/night) is available at the Courtyard by Marriott at Yale; call 203-777-6221 by March 2 (mention “Coalition for Ministry in Daily Life Consultation 2005”). Attendees are responsible for arranging their own lodging.

Cost

The consultation registration fee of $149 ($125 for early bird registration by March 2) covers three meals (Friday dinner, Saturday lunch and dinner), materials, the opening wine-cheese reception, and coffee breaks. The deadline for registration is March 25. Limited scholarship aid is available, especially for attendees in their twenties and thirties.

Working Retreat

Participants in the CMDL consultation will have the opportunity to continue their reflections and conversations at a post-consultation working retreat, to begin 4:30 pm on Sunday, April 3, and to continue through lunch on Tuesday, April 5.

The retreat will be held at Mercy Center in Madison, CT, on Long Island Sound.

Retreat participants will formulate their own agendas for this time together, with the expectation being that a major part of their conversations will focus on the implications for CMDL’s future work (including the 2006 consultation at Fuller Seminary) of insights that have emerged during the weekend in New Haven.

The total cost of lodging and meals for each person will be either $152 (twin bed, double occupancy, central bath); $182 (single room, central bath); or $205 (single room, private bath).

Participants at the working retreats following the last two consultations, in 2003 and 2004, have found them to be a rich time for deepening personal bonds and commitments.

Checks to cover retreat costs, made out to CMDL, should be sent no later than March 21 to Rev. John Lewis, 315 East Pecan St., San Antonio, TX 78205
