  • Two Senior Directors of Business Operations Named

    (August 30, 2007) Stephen Murphy, Associate Vice President of Business Operations, recently announced that Jack Beecher and Brian Rebeschi have accepted positions as Senior Directors of Business Operations effective October 1, 2007. Jack will have responsibility for the Other Academic and Support units, and Brian will have responsibility for the Officer units.

    In their new roles Jack and Brian will be responsible for ensuring the departments, schools, and units in their respective groups receive high quality financial and administrative support. The business managers (lead department administrators) in each of these groups will have a reporting line to the Senior Directors. This reporting relationship is in addition to the business managers reporting line to the Dean, Director, or Chair of the unit. Jack and Brian will also be members of the Business Operations senior leadership team, and they will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and leading university-wide initiatives to improve the financial and administrative support for faculty, students, and staff at Yale.

    Jack currently serves as the Clinical Administrator for the Department of Anesthesiology in the Yale School of Medicine (YSM), and he is the President of the MGMA Anesthesia Administration Assembly. Jack has been involved in numerous University committees and projects, including as a departmental advisor in the business systems planning process for Finance & Administration and as a leader of Career Pathing in Finance, an acclaimed program for helping administrative staff develop their careers at Yale. Jack earned his B.S. from Quinnipiac and his M.P.H. from Yale.

    Brian currently serves as the Clinical Administrator for the Child Study Center and the Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation in YSM. Brian has a reputation as a strong leader and developer of people and as an innovator of business practices and systems. He also serves on the Business Services Improvement Advisory Group, which counsels the Vice President for Finance & Administration on opportunities to improve the cost and quality of support services at Yale. Brian earned his B.S. from Central Connecticut State University and his masters degree in healthcare administration from Quinnipiac.

  • Savage Assumes Role of Director, Best Practices

    (August 13, 2007) On behalf of the University and Locals 34 and 35, the Labor Management Policy Board recently announced that Jane Savage has assumed the role of Director, Best Practices. Jane will be supporting the Best Practices Initiative and labor-management partnership between Yale University and Locals 34 & 35, Federation of University Employees, UNITE HERE. Established in 2003, the mission of the Best Practices Initiative is to increase Yale’s overall productivity and quality, and to improve the workplace culture through the joint efforts of the University and the two Locals. To date, joint projects have been undertaken in Athletics, Dining Services, Yale Animal Resources Center, British Arts Center, the Library, University Health Services, Internal Medicine, Yale Medical Group, and Facilities. Jane will support these units and the expansion of this initiative.

    Jane comes to her new position as an alumna of the Yale School of Management and with consulting experience on a variety of organization development and labor-management efforts, including health care organizations involved in a partnership between the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes of New York and 1199 SEIU, as well as Fortune 500 apparel, chemical, and auto supply manufacturers partnering with UNITE HERE. Jane also has experience with university operations. Most recently, she was employed by the Cornell University ILR School Extension Division where she assisted its leadership team in undertaking significant changes to their mission and services, managed the Organizational Change Group, and co-founded and directed a training program that teaches skills in managing change to human resource professionals, consultants, and managers.

    The Policy Board looks forward to the contributions Jane will make to the Best Practices Initiatives and to building our labor-management relationship through her multiple perspectives as a manager, a union member (in her early work as a structural engineer), a Yale student and alum, and a resident of New Haven for more than fifteen years.

    The Best Practices Initiative is important to both the University and Locals 34 and 35. Given Jane’s background and qualifications, this appointment advances our commitment to the objectives of the program. Please join the Labor Management Policy Board and Initiatives Steering Committee in welcoming Jane to her new role.

 

  • Sykes Named New CFO

    (June 11, 2007) Gwendolyn Sykes will be joining Yale University as Chief Financial Officer effective July 1st. Gwen will report directly to Shauna King, Vice President of Finance and Administration.

    As CFO, Gwen will be responsible for the financial stewardship of the University, including budgeting, accounting and transaction management, financial reporting, internal control and the integrity of financial information. A critical focus of Gwen's will be on systems and process transformation in her areas of responsibility, and the use of technology and process re-design to increase the efficiency and quality of core activities such as accounts payable, payroll, financial budgeting and reporting.

    Gwen's reporting team will include Associate Vice President and Chief Procurement Officer (John Mayes) and Assistant Vice President and Controller (Cary B. Scapillato), as well as the Internal Audit and the Budget and Planning offices. Gwen will work closely with the members of the senior team in Finance and Administration, as well as with the administrative leadership of the University.

    A long-time public servant, Gwen comes to us from NASA, where she has been the CFO since 2003. She was appointed to her position overseeing the financial management and health of the $16 billion agency by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. At NASA, she led over 500 finance professionals located across the United States in the development and execution of financial policies, processes and procedures. She also provided financial impact analysis for NASA's strategic and operational decision making, and implemented a centralized accounting system at the agency.

    Gwen was an analyst for the Department of Defense for a decade before joining NASA, and also worked in Congress for U.S. Senator Ted Stevens from Alaska. She earned her B.A. in accounting from Catholic University and her M.P.A. from American University.

    Gwen is eager to be a part of our F&A transformation efforts and to apply her experience and skills to help create a world class organization with a culture of excellence commensurate with Yale's academic enterprises.
