Summer Fellowship Program
Summer 2009 Environmental
Fellowship for Study and Research
Fellowship Application Deadline Monday, February 23, 2009
Students must also
register with Yale Grants and Fellowships by the February 23, 2009 deadline: http://studentgrants.yale.edu/
We welcome fellowship applications from all Yale undergraduates except for graduating seniors interested in learning about environmental issues this summer. Preference will be given to juniors seeking practical experience with basic or applied problems relevant to their senior research project.
- The summer experience should provide training in environmental work of interest to the student and is a valid use only if the primary component is for study or research. Possibilities include interning with an environmental organization or governmental agency, taking a course at a qualified educational institution, or working on a research project in the field or laboratory at Yale or at another institution.
- Students should investigate and select a suitable project, field course, or training program before applying for the internship program.
- Potential applicants should discuss and develop their summer plans with a member of the Yale faculty in their area of interest.
APPLICATION INFORMATION
Please
submit the following:
- Title and 1-2 page description of the proposed plan of study or research project: Include an explanation of how the plan relates to the applicant's educational goals and will broaden his/her understanding of environmental problems.
- Yale faculty letter: Include a letter approving the proposed project from a member of the Yale Faculty with whom the student has discussed his/her summer plans. Ordinarily this should be the faculty member supervising the student over the summer or the student's faculty advisor. To download a faculty letter of support form (OPTIONAL), click here.
- External letter from your supervisor/contact/advisor:If a student has plans to intern or conduct a research project with the assistance of a non-governmental organization, a government agency or at any place other than at Yale, especially if your summer plans are outside of the U.S., then an external letter from the organization verifying the student’s plans in required. This letter is in addition to the letter from the student’s faculty advisor.
- Itemized budget: Program, travel, living, and personal research expenditures may be included on the budget. Student income contribution (SIC) obligations will be considered in the budget for students receiving Yale financial aid. However, lost wages or stipends cannot be considered as expenses with this fellowship. Students are STRONGLY encouraged to seek support for their project from more than one source, especially if the overall budget of the project exceeds $4,000. Include other possible sources of funding that you are applying for. Awards from all sources will be limited to the total amount needed for the project.
Email all application materials to Debbie Broadwater, Program Manager of the Environmental Studies Program at deborah.broadwater@yale.edu by Monday, February 23, 2009. Letters of recommendation should be addressed to the Faculty Internship Committee and be emailed to Debbie Broadwater or delivered to the Environmental Studies Program Office at 210 Prospect Street, Room 102.
