PAID Environmental Internship/Research Programs
- Adirondack Council Clarence Petty Internship Program: Interns gain valuable first-hand experience working with the conservation or fund development and marketing staff in the Council’s main office in Elizabethtown, NY (in the Adirondack Park) or with the government relations and communications programs in Albany, NY. The Adirondack Council is committed to providing students with a practical, educational experience as an advocate for the Adirondack Park and environmental protection and offering an experience that will prepare them for work in an environmental not-for-profit, government agency or conservation fieldwork. Recent interns have provided public policy and conservation research, participated in public meetings regarding state land management and in community outreach programs to raise awareness about the ecological and political threats facing the Park. Available to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in environmental studies, public policy, natural resource management, law, public relations and marketing. Internship is for 3 months with compensation of $3000. For application information, click here.
- Alaska Conservation Foundation - Conservation Intern Program Internships (generally 12 weeks) in AK available with non-profit groups, agencies, Alaska Native groups, and other interested organizations that have identified assignments complimenting ACF's mission - stipends provided for interns. Must be a U.S. Citizen and currently enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate degree program. Deadline is usually in mid-February.
- Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program
The Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program offers internships in Washington, D.C., in the fields of public policy and non-profit management, as well as placements at State-Based Policy Networks across the country. The internship also includes: Career Workshops; Seminars and Speakers; $1,500 Stipend; Housing and Airfare. The deadine is usually at the end of January.
- Everett Public Service Internship Program
Annual summer internship program lasting 10 weeks where undergraduate/graduate students enrolled in a U.S. institution work on substantive projects in the areas of the environment, social justice, health advocacy, art, education, or social change for one of the organizations affiliated with Everett in either New York City or Washington, DC. Each Everett Intern is given a stipend, and deadlines to apply are usually between March-April. Organizations participating in this Program include NRDC, Center for a New American Dream, Co-op America, Institute for Policy Studies, League of Conservation Voters, New York Botanical Garden, and etc.
- Institute
of Ecosystem Studies - Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program provides 10 students an opportunity to conduct quality research in ecology at a well-established research institute. Students receive a stipend of $4,800 for their participation in the program, which runs for 12-weeks from the end of May to late August, IES provides housing for students for the entire summer plus a food allowance of $600. Deadline is usually in mid-February.
- Mountain Lake Biological Station's Research Experiences for Undergraduates Mountain Lake Biological Station's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU-Sites) program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (DBI 0453380) and brings undergraduate students from around the country together for an exciting ten-week summer program of guided, but independent, original research in field biology. All expenses are paid and participants take home a stipend of $4,000. Application deadline is usually in early March.

- Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana The primary goal of this program is to engage motivated undergraduates in carefully selected research projects in sub-Sahara Africa towards extending their educational experiences at the global level. The areas of emphasis are ecology, environmental science and conservation biology. In the past, the application deadline has been in mid-February.
- Resources for the Future Summer Internship Program RFF has annual paid summer internships for outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of Energy and Natural Resources (ENR), Quality of the Environment (QE), and Risk, Resource, and Environmental Management (RREM). Priority consideration is given to graduate students. The program is open to both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens if enrolled at a U.S. university. The deadline is usually in early March.
- Terrestrial and Aquatic Environmental Research at Ursinus College Ursinus College offers paid summer research opportunities in environmental science in the areas of microbiology, climate change, ecology of mammals, and watershed management. Application deadline is usually in mid-March.
- U.S. Community Forestry Research Undergraduate Research/Internship in Community-based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM). The deadline is usually in mid-April.
- US EPA's National Network
for Environmental Management Studies Fellowship Program (NNEMS)The NNEMS program is a comprehensive fellowship program that provides undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to participate in a fellowship project that is directly related to their field of study. Application deadline is usually in late January.
- University of Texas at Austin Environmental Science Institute (ESI) Integrated environmental science research Program This program will stress the connections between scientific and policy fields related to the environment. Why is this important? Think about trying to manage a river ecosystem without considering the influence of human society on water quality. This program will tackle difficult issues like this by bringing together researchers from a variety of disciplines, and letting you hear how their work relates to the bigger picture. Application deadline is usually in early March.
- Urbanization Impacts on Stream Ecosystems Research All research projects will be integrated around the central concept that urbanization alters the ecology and genetic diversity of stream organisms, but participants will select among projects approaching this hypothecates with different methods and organisms, including studies of ecology or genetic diversity of plants, invertebrates, fish, and amphibians. Review of applications is usually in early March.
- Yosemite Research Training in Environmental Science The Yosemite Research Training in Environmental Science offers undergraduate students a unique opportunity to actively experience field research in environmental science in a premier National Park, over a nine-week period in the summer from June-August. Eight students are recruited from the University of California at Merced, colleges in the Central Valley of California, and colleges nationwide. Application deadline is usually in mid-March.
