Robert Young
Robert Young is the Director of Custodial Services and has been working at Yale for seven years. He previously worked at Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan and for the Unisys Corporation. His first involvement in environmental issues was as the safety and security manager at the Unisys World Headquarters where they initiated an extensive recycling program for all the paper generated by their data centers.
The sustainability initiatives at the Yale Custodial Department involves the supervisors and custodians in the discovery and decision making process. The Department believes in creating an environment that perpetuates green behavior. To accomplish this they involved the people that use and buy the products in the analysis of the efficacy and environmental cleaning products. They resisted simply buying products and looked holistically at how products are used, purchased and discarded. The Yale Custodial Department recently converted the entire campus to 100% recycled toilet paper and hand towels. They are currently testing environmentally friendly floor finish, disinfectants and glass cleaners. They also have several pilot projects underway to increase the volume of recycled paper.
