Thomas Downing
Tom Downing joined Yale University in early 2002 as The University’s Energy Manager and works in the Facilities Systems Engineering group. Tom graduated from the University of Connecticut with a BS in Environmental Engineering in 1989 and later attended Yale University in the Special Students Program to further his studies in Environmental Science. Tom was previously employed at the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft division of United Technologies for 12 years, where he was the Chief Mechanical Engineer for all Pratt & Whitney Facilities Operations. Tom is a registered Professional Engineer, a LEED Accredited Professional and a Certified Energy Manager.
Tom’s Major responsibilities include oversight of monthly energy consumption data production for 250+ Yale buildings, University energy/emissions recording and forecasting, and the initiation/project management of energy conservation and renewable energy projects around campus. Tom can often be found speaking to students, faculty, staff, and community groups regarding Yale’s energy and emissions goals, initiatives and experiences. Tom is the leading figure behind setting up the solar panels on the Divinity School and the motion-sensored lighting in Yale buildings.
