Dr. Deb P. Jaisi joined the Elimelech Group in June of 2007 as the Interdepartmental Bateman Scholar, and is co-advised by Dr. Ruth E. Blake (Geology and Geophysics) and Dr. Menachem Elimelech (Environmental Engineering).

Dr. Jaisi has worked in many different areas at many different levels. He has experience as an Engineering Geologist working on hydropower projects and designing tunnel and cut-slopes in Nepal (1998-1999), as a lecturer in Geology at Tribhuvan University in Nepal (1999 to 2001) and as a Research Associate in hazardous waste landfill liner research in Thailand (2001-2003). Dr. Jaisi has been awarded several prizes and decorations, including a Gold Medal from His Majesty the King of Nepal (1998).

Dr. Jaisi's interdisciplinary research focuses on interface and aqueous geochemistry, and its application to environmental problems. Specifically, his research involves iron redox reactions and biogeochemistry, biogeochemical cycling of metals and long-term immobilization of radionuclides. His recent research shows some promising results on the use of redox modified smectites for reduction and long-term immobilization of radionuclides such as technetium. His research at Yale will focus on two areas: 1) tracing the (bio)geochemical reaction pathway using stable isotopes; and 2) characterization and mobility analysis of iron and carbon nanoparticles in the natural media.
