Anna is a PhD candidate working with Prof. Menachem Elimelech to provide novel treatment systems for pathogen removal from water. Her most recent work is the development of a CNT-hybrid filter which attains 5-7 log removal of viruses under gravity driven pressures. The filter also achieves 100% removal of E. coli with over 80% inactivation, thereby reducing biofouling. The study of the hybrid filter is focused on providing portable water treatment options at low costs, and low energy inputs for use in developing and developed regions alike.

Alongside this scientific research Anna has worked with the Yale Engineers Without Borders (EWB) on a water project in Honduras, and has additionally been engaged in advanced cultural and language studies to build her ability to bring projects to fruition in various geographic, economic and cultural contexts.  Anna had previous exposure to these areas during her undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins where she completed a second major in Spanish.  During that time, she was a Vredenburg scholar serving as an intern to the U.S. Embassy in Santiago Chile, working with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to establish joint ventures with Chilean scientists and government.  Her studies in Chile were completed by 6 months of classes and labwork at la Universidad Católica and la Universidad de Chile, where she was an engineering student and volunteer in community development projects.

Anna has been active as a student leader on Yale’s campus, and was recently elected as the President of the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS), the largest student government at Yale representing all of the 6,000 students across the twelve graduate and professional schools of Yale University.  Prior to her election as President, Anna served as the Student Advocate for the GPSS.  In her capacity as GPSS President, Ms. Brady-Estévez additionally serves on the boards of the Association of Yale Alumni, and Yale Alumni Magazine.

Anna’s research is funded through a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

Additional interests include:  almost all sports (but especially running and baseball), music, world cultures and travel, language study (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, Italian), community activism, adventures in nature, and enjoying the company of family and friends.
