Undergraduate Program

Requirements of the Major

 Pre-requisite:

  • Engl 125a and 125b or,
  • four (4) courses in major English poets covered in 125a or 125b and two (2) semesters of DRST 001, Engl 127 or Engl 129 or,
  • one (1) section of Engl 125 and two (2) courses in major English poets.

Number of Courses:

Fourteen (14) courses (which includes the prerequisite and the senior requirement).

Distribution of Courses:

For the class of 2010 and earlier classes :

1. Three (3) courses in English lit before 1800.
2. One (1) course in English lit before 1900.
(Upper level lit courses used as substitutions may not be counted toward the pre-1800 or the pre-1900 requirement.)
3. Two (2) starred (*) seminars [ one in junior year ,one in senior year].
4. Maximum of four (4) introductory level courses.

For the class of 2011 and later classes:

1. Three (3) courses in English lit before 1800.
2. One (1) course in English lit before 1900.
(Upper level lit courses used as substitutions may not be counted toward the pre-1800 or the pre-1900 requirement.)
3. One term course in American Literature. Courses in American Literature in the Pre- 1800 or Pre- 1900 periods may satisfy both one of the period requirements as well as the requirement in American literature.
4. Two (2) starred (*) seminars [one in junior year, one in senior year].

Substitutions:

Two (2) upper-level lit courses in other depts. and two (2) creative writing courses ( Engl 140-141,450-469) may count towards the major (three (3) with permission of DUS/ADUS), unless you are a writing concentration major, in which case four (4) creative writing courses may be counted towards the major). College seminars approved by the DUS/ADUS as a starred seminar.

Library Requirement:

Completion of a 90-minute library research session (offered at the start of each semester), or a seminar with LIBR designation.

Senior Requirement:

For the class of 2010 and earlier classes :

One senior seminar (Engl 400-449 and 480-488) taken during senior year, or an independent Senior Essay (Engl 490a or b). A student may, with permission of DUS and Instructor, take a junior seminar for senior seminar credit.

For the class of 2011 and later classes:

Students must complete a two course senior requirement consisting of one of the following combinations:
1. A senior seminar and a senior essay
2. Two departmental seminars, one of which must be a senior seminar.
3. A two term senior essay (special permission required)
4. A senior seminar or senior essay followed by the Writing Concentration project. (the seminar need not be a 400 level course with this option )

Other Info:

  1. Courses taken Cr/D/Fail may be counted toward the major.
  2. Please consult with the DUS/ADUS at the start of each semester for update on your status in meeting all requirements, and direct any questions involving substitution of above listed requirements to them.
