Graduate Program

Admissions

Students are admitted to graduate study (only in the Fall) by the Graduate School on the recommendation of the Department. Entering classes now average twelve students. Although the program is primarily intended for those who wish to complete the Ph.D., we may admit a few students each year who wish to persue a terminal Master of Arts. (For further details on this alternative, please consult the Yale University Graduate School Bulletin.)

Admissions requirements: Selection is based on the applicant's undergraduate record, the results of the Graduate Record Examination (including the subject test on "Literature in English"), evidence of motivation supplied in the candidate's personal statement of purpose, evidence of ability to do advanced work as expressed in a writing sample (10-15 pages) and supported by three letters of recommendation, and sufficient preparation in languages. (Details on our language requirement are available at www.yale.edu/english/graduate-requirements.)

The application for admission is available online only: http://www.yale.edu/graduateschool/admissions/index.html.

Admissions for Fall 2009 is closed. However, you may find information about programs and application procedures by visiting the Graduate School's web site.

The application deadline for Fall 2010 is January 2, 2010. The online application will become available in mid-August 2009. All application materials, supporting credentials and recommendations, official standardized test scores, and application fee must be received by the deadline to be considered by Yale for Fall 2010 admission.
