Admissions

English Language Institute courses are designed for serious students of university age (undergraduate, graduate, or professional students). Qualified high school students, at least 17 years of age and entering the final year of high school, may also be admitted. Students who have not yet graduated from high school (pre-university students) must submit two letters of recommendation and transcripts of their high school record. For the online application click on Application and read the section on How to Apply.

The intensive language course is designed for intermediate to advanced level students. We therefore discourage students who are just beginning their study of the English language. The specialized graduate and professional courses are appropriate for the more advanced learner.

Although Yale does not require a TOEFL score for admission, prospective students may be able to use scores to evaluate their English language ability, and we use the score to help in our placement process. Intermediate level is considered to be between 63 and 133 on the computer-based TOEFL (350-450 on the paper test); advanced level is in the range of 213-280 on the computer-based test (550-650 on the paper test).
