DOT's Material of Trade (MOT) Exemption

This is a recommended course designed to provide guidance on transporting hazardous material under the Department of Transportation (DOT) "Material of Trade" exemption. Those wishing to transport under this exemption must either take this course or demonstrate knowledge of the Material of Trade requirements.

Certain research materials transported by private motor carriers, for the purpose of direct support of their business, are exempt from most of the DOT's hazardous materials regulations.

For a hazardous material to be considered a MOT, it must meet specific quantity limits and hazard classifications. If you need assistance identifying the hazard class, division, or packing group, please contact the or by calling EHS at 785-3550.

The course reviews the three business purposes that are allowed under this transportation exemption, the types and amounts of hazardous materials that may be transported, and container types, marking, and transportation practices that must be followed.

To fulfill your training requirement, review the training and successfully complete the online quiz. The training is located at: http://www.yale.edu/ehs/powerpoint/MOT.htm.

Prior to shipping any material, a Research Materials Shipment Request must be completed and faxed to EHS at 785-7588 or sent through campus mail to: EHS, 135 College Street, Suite 100.
