Shipping Biological Substances - Category B -Exempt Human and Animal Specimens Definition: Biological Substances are diagnostic or clinical specimens from humans or animals that are known to harbor a pathogen or have a high probability of containing a pathogen. Exempt Human or Animal Specimens are biological substances not known to harbor a pathogen or that have lower probability of containing a pathogen.
This is a mandatory course designed to fulfill performance-specific training requirements for employees who do any of the following: package, label, ship, prepare shipping documents, offer packages of hazardous materials to carriers for shipment, transport and/or receive biological substances.
This course reviews the shipping regulations from the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Permits, shipping declaration forms, labels, and emergency response procedures are among the items that will be addressed. This training also fulfills the requirements for shipping dry ice and the General Awareness Training

Prior to shipping any material, a Research Materials Shipment Request must be completed and faxed to EHS at 785-7588 or sent through campus mail to: EHS, 135 College Street, Suite 100. Note: Retraining is required 2 year intervals.
Warning: This training will not allow you to ship biological substances containing or having a high probability of containing a Risk Group 4/BSL-4 agent or a Select Agent. Infectious Substance, Category A training is required to ship these materials.
