Laboratory Safety

The Office of Environmental Health & Safety is committed to promoting safety awareness and safe work practices in Yale’s laboratories for its faculty, staff, students and visitors.

Laboratory safety depends on every employee's participation and cooperation and their commitment to do their job in a way that is safe for himself and his coworkers.

Noncompliance with safety precautions not only endangers the individual, but often compromises the health and safety of fellow workers and the surrounding community, and may result in loss and/or damage.

REMEMBER:

  • All accidents can be prevented.
  • Know the safety procedures that apply to the work being done.
  • Determine the potential hazards (e.g., physical, chemical, biological) and appropriate safety precautions before beginning any new operations.

The primary goal of each individual should be to minimize the risk of injury or illness to yourself and your co-workers by ensuring that you and they have the training, information, support and equipment needed to work safely in the laboratory.
