Work with Human Blood or Other Potentially Infectious Materials

I. Work with Human Blood or Other Potentially Infectious Material (Including Human Cell Lines) or Bloodborne Pathogens

All employees who may have occupational exposure to human blood, unfixed human tissues, human cell/tissue cultures, certain other body fluids or bloodborne pathogens must receive OSHA Required Bloodborne Pathogens Training before they initiate assignments with any of these materials. For a current list of EHS classroom sessions, visit Yale's training website at http://www.yale.edu/training. OSHA requires that all employees receive retraining within 365 days of their previous training date.

The Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) vaccination series must be offered to occupationally exposed employees within 10 days of their initial assignment. EHS explains the free HBV vaccine program for occupationally exposed employees during the Bloodborne Pathogens training session. All occupationally exposed employees must complete the HBV vaccine notification form whether they wish to receive the vaccination or not. Employees must contact the Employee Health Office at 432-7978 to make arrangements to receive the vaccination. The office is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30am to 5:00pm, but please call to confirm vaccine clinic hours on the day you wish to come.

Additional requirements for the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard are outlined in the "Universal Precautions Summary". Complete the "Principal Investigator/Lab Supervisor Responsibilities Checklist" to help achieve compliance with this regulation and Yale University Policy.
