Yale University has changed the way it
treats and disposes of the biomedical waste generated on
campus. This site describes how you should be handling
and packaging this waste for disposal. Proper management
of this waste will ensure your safety as well as the safety
of those removing, autoclaving and disposing of this material
on campus. We believe these new procedures will be safe,
cost effective, and in most cases, reduce the amount of
time researchers spend handling this waste. We appreciate
your taking the time to review this information and your
assistance in ensuring this waste is properly managed in
your laboratory.
There are four types of waste being generated
in laboratories and disposed of through the biomedical waste program.
These include:
- Sharp plastic, and soft laboratory waste contaminated
with biological material (or contaminated laboratory
waste);
- Pathological waste;
- certain unregulated chemical wastes; and
- Sharp plastic, and soft laboratory waste not contaminated
with biological material (or uncontaminated laboratory
waste).
