STATEMENT ON SCHOLARLY AND ETHICAL PRACTICES

As program leaders in the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations, we reiterate our commitment to ethical and inclusive scholarly practices. Each of us arrived at Yale in the last six years. We chose to join this department to enhance its intellectual life and curriculum. (A Yale Daily News article on our activities can be found here.) We condemn disrespect shown to the communities in which we collaborate as scholars, teachers, and colleagues. We remain committed practitioners of anti-racist and anti-colonial pedagogies. Our work is not complete. In our ongoing work, we denounce the glorification of colonial exploitation. We continue to learn ways to reckon honestly with the past and insist on developing awareness of our own intellectual and ethical positions in the present.
